Maui Energy News May 2017


It is not often we have fun energy news with photos! – however if you come down the Kuihelani Hwy 380 from Kahului to Lahaina it’s hard to miss the Pacific Biodiesel’s first biofuel crop of 14-acres of sunflowers (check out a few photos in the blog). This is a test field for the initial 115-acre crop project. It will be harvested in June 2017 as the flowers mature and dry out. A second field has just been planted and will be flowering in about 2 months. The brightly colored crop has been attracting people who park on the highway and have been stealing and damaging the sunflowers. Pacific BioDiesel are working on safe ways visitors can enjoy the next crop.

Pacific BioDiesel expects to yield 100+ gallons of oil per acre per harvest with up to 3 harvests per year.  Pacific BioDiesel runs its biofuel farming 100% on renewable fuel. Check out this link for more information on this project.

In other exciting energy news, Maui Electric has 17 Watts of storage per customer and is ranked number 7 in the nation among 412 utilities nationwide for energy storage to the grid.

Hawaii is ranked fifth in the latest analysis by the Union of Concerned Scientists which used 12 metrics to measure each States renewable energy policies.  Hawaii ranked top in residential solar per capita, and fourth in electric vehicle adoption, and was in the top 10 for eight of the 12 metrics. California was judged to be doing the best job of transitioning to clean energy followed by Vermont and Massachusetts.

The JUMPSmartMaui project launched in June 2011 has successfully completed both phases of its project with 530 residents and businesses participating. The project used Nissan Leaf electric vehicles, fast charging stations and EV-Power Conditioning Systems developed by Hitachi to better understand how Smart Grid technology, renewable energy and EVs can work together and manage clean energy.  The joint US-Japan collaborative, demonstration project was funded by NEDO – Japans public research & development management organization.

Maui Accolades for May 2017

IMG_5151_2As mentioned in Aprils newsletter Maui Brewing Company Executives were recognized as the Small Business Person of the Year for Hawaii. They travelled to Washington DC and WON the National Small Business Person for 2017. This is the third time a Hawaii small business has won.

The newly renovated Four Seasons Lanai was named to Conde Nast 2017 Hot list for best properties opened in last year. The Four Seasons has also received the AAA Five Diamond designation, Robb Report’s Best of the Best 2016 – Journeys; Travel + Leisure’s It List -2016; Andrew Harper’s 2016 Reader’s Choice Awards for Best Beach Resort awards and Golf and Golfweek top resort course accolades this year.

Maui surfers took three of the seven awards at the World Surf League Big Wave Awards at Huntington Beach, Billy Kemper won Ride of the Year – for his Peahi wave ride, Paige Alms took the Women’s Best Performance Award after winning the Pe’ahi Challenge and becoming the first Women’s Big Wave Champion. Francisco Porcella took the Tag Heuer XXL Biggest Wave Award for his rider at Nazare, Portugal

The Kihei Restaurant Three’s Bar and Grill will be seen on the Food Network’s popular show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” Episode was filmed in April – don’t know when it will air.

Maui Nō Ka ‘Oi Magazines ‘Aipono Awards were held at the Hyatt Regency Maui April 23rd and Maui restaurants again shone. The Special awards this year:-  Three’s Bar & Grill and Fork & Salad received the Maui County Farm Bureau’s Friend of Agriculture.  Maui Tropical Plantation was recognized for their Excellence in Sustainability including their award-winning The Mill House restaurant. Nā Hoaloha ʻEkolu which owns and operate Old Lāhaina Lū‘au, Aloha Mixed Plate, Star Noodle, and Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop received the ‘Aipono Icon Award for their 30 years of dedication which have resulted in nearly 50 ‘Aipono Awards. We have room for a couple of Hawaii news items/Accolades this month.

Hawaii is also one of the 10 most fun states in the US according to WalletHub, but it does have the fewest fitness centers per capita in the country!

Hawaii is the best U.S. state for women to live and work, according to MoveHub, a relocation company and ranks among the top states for Children’s Health Care with the 6th highest score according to WalletHub.  Hawaii has the lowest percentage of unaffordable medical bills and received the fourth best score the access to health care for children. Hawaii is also one of the top 5 least expensive states to set up home insurance in.

Talking of records – you may have heard we had a chilly last weekend in April!  The peak of Mauna Kea on the Big Island had snow on May 1st 2017. Honolulu International Airport reported a record low temperature at 8am April 30th of 61 degrees. Here is Maui we have the very unusual occurrence of two solid days of rain in a row which left water gushing out of the hillside and across the Honoapi’ilani Highway (check out this video).  Most of our rain gauges showed between 200 -500% of normal for April.

Maui Flight News May 2017

Not surprisingly Hawaiian airlines are reporting an increase of 4.2% for April already, carrying over 900,000 passengers.  Hawaiian has transported 3.6M passengers so far in 2017, 2.7% above 2016. Hawaiian is celebrating with some updated branding. The iconic “Pualani” –flower of the sky, tail logo continues its iconic forty-four-year gaze, but the fuselage of the 54 aircraft in the Hawaiian Airlines fleet will now be wrapped with a silver maile lei of pakalana flowers. The new logo will also be seen on the web, apps and lobby, kiosk & boarding gate signage.

Hawaiian Airlines are also extending its popular non-stop summer flights between Los Angeles and Kauai and Los Angeles and Kona to year-round service. Summer service between Oakland and Kauai returns between May 27th and Sept 4th.

Honolulu based Island Air, announced this month, an interline partnership with Jin Air, who fly between Seouls Incheon International Airport and Honolulu. Now travelers can book connections between Island Airs Hawaiian network & Jin Airs flights to Korea & Southeast Asia on a single ticket.  From May 29th Jin Air will fly between Seoul and Honolulu 5 times a week.

Maui Tourism Report April 2017


The Hawaii Tourism industry just completed a first quarter which exceed expectations. March 2017 visitor spending increased 12.3% the highest monthly increase since December 2012! For first quarter the Statewide visitor spending is 10.4% ahead of 2016 and visitor arrivals were up 3.1%. On Maui visitor spending is up 6.8% with visitor arrivals were up 2.6% for March. First quarter arrivals were up 1.2% for a total of over 660,000 visitors so far this year. This puts Maui and the state ahead again of the record breaking 2017 numbers with Japanese visitors boosting the numbers due to the additional flights to Honolulu and the new direct flights to Kona from Haneda.

Maui News May 2017


Big news for West Maui, the new owners of the 15-acre Lahaina Cannery Mall, U.S. Realty Partners have big $18 Million renovation plans. The major change is the Lahaina Safeway on the northern end will finally get its deserved expansion growing from 37,650 to 64,500 Square feet inside the mall’s existing structure with the ABC store relocating. The Safeway expansion will begin in June with the updated store including organic produce section, expanded deli services and new meat and fish counters to be complete in 2nd quarter 2018.  Just South of the Cannery, there is much activity at the Kahoma Village development where infrastructure is going in.

The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas is now open – a traditional Hawaiian blessing was held on April 14th for 120 member of the new resorts staff. A new restaurant Mauka Makai will use local ingredients to celebrate the farming and fishing culture of ancient Hawaii. It is open for breakfast and dinner. While on restaurants – Koa 156° (formerly Koa Seaside Grill on Front St) and Pineapple Grill have both recently introduced new menus.

The transition of Maui Memorial Medical Center, as well as Kula Hospital & Clinic and Lānaʻi Community Hospital to private sector Kaiser Permanente is on track for the July 1st transfer. State funding of $73M is now approved for the operation of the Maui hospitals and its workers including current state employees. Kaiser Moanalua Medical center just earned an “A” grade from the Spring 2017 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, as one of the safest hospitals in the U.S.  Eight Hawaii hospitals received “A” grades, 6 on Oahu, and one in each Lihue, Kauai & Hilo.

There is also news on the Kaanapali Golf Courses Revitalization Project, Lahaina News reports a public information meeting on the proposed project is scheduled for Wednesday May 10th at 5:30pm at the West Maui Senior Center. The Project is scheduled for the 2020-2025 timeframe. An Environmental Impact Statement Preparation Notice (EISPN) will be published this month which will be followed by a 30-day public comment period. Maui Real Estate Statistics and News April 2017


The April 2017 statistics are just in from the Realtors Association of Maui (RAM).  In April 2017, there were 97 homes sold, so sales have returned to normal levels after the slow January/February. The median price for single-family homes was $671,000, like April 2016. There were 116 Condos sold this month, eight fewer than April 2016. The median price was back up to $490,563, up 25% compared to last month and over 10% above April 2016 median. Again, this month saw a lot of activity in South Maui, with owners upgrading to new developments, but the share for West Maui rose. There were 18 Vacant lots sold this month, with a median of $404,750, though the small sample of land is very variable.

In the Luxury market, we saw three homes sold for over $2M this month 2 in West Maui, one in Launiupoko and one in the Ka’anapali Golf Estates and one in Kihei. Eleven Condos were sold for over $1.5M this month, six in South Maui at Wailea and five in West Maui, three at Honua Kai and one at the Ritz and one at Coconut Grove.  There was 2 Lots sold for over $1M this month, both on the west side, one in Olowalu and one in Launiupoko.

For April based on purely “Active,” (not any pending/contingent) the absorption rates are the same at 5.6 months for Residential Sales and down to 4.2 months for Condo’s.

April 2017 was another good month for pending sales on Single-Family Homes and Condos, with more going pending than in March 2016. As usual, escrow is typically 60 days, so there is a delay in realization of this increase.

In the latest National real estate news, CoreLogic’s Home Price Index (HPI) Report shows a 1.6% rise in home prices month over month for March 2017 and 7.1% year over year, including distressed sales. The HPI Forecast is projecting an increase of 4.9% on a year over year basis from March 2017 to March 2018 and March 2017 to April 2017 month over month is expected to increase 0.6%.
